A history of gay bars and places in the city of Detroit, Michigan
The Crow Bar was the fore runner of Dee's Lounge. The Crow Bar closed in the late 1970s. Dee's Lounge opened soon afterwards and lasted until the mid 1980s.
ReplyDeleteThe Crow Bar was the first gay bar I went to at 18 years old. I still remember hearing Anita Ward's classic Ring my Bell as I walked into the bar. My how time flies!
ReplyDeleteDee's lounge as I knew it! A bunch of Port Huron queens used to take me along. It was fascinating going to Mt. Clemens with it's tall buildings. I was either just under age or actually 21, I don't think they checked. I remember the light up dance floor squares. I always got lost trying to find my own way back, then I rememberd it was before the county building heading North on Gratiot. The parking lot was dark and scary.
ReplyDeleteI won 1st place talent show in 1980/1981 playing my drums to Barbra Streisand live on their multi-light disco floor! LOL What happened to peaceful multi-Gender Identity, sexual orientation peaceful bars of that era? I cry for Orlando killed GLBT! Watch out for each other in PEACE!
ReplyDeleteI heard the Bar was burned down or had a mysterious "Fire". I believe it was the only official Gay bar in Macomb County and I do not believe one has opened since.
ReplyDeleteI remember Dee's lounge in Mt Clemens so fondly. Great raised lighted floor to dance on, fantastic music. No cover, gay bar with a peaceful diverse crowd. Some of my best memories made there. I even have a memento brick from when they tore it down.
