ReplyDeleteNever went to Club 49 located on E. Jefferson, bout 3/4 mile east of Belle Isle, accross from the Jeffersonian Apts.; I was too young b4 it closed. But have older gay friends who say "It was the BEST! Old Detroit swag with a piano player, attracted 'all kinds of people', regardless of anything, & attitudes were 'checked @ the door', & fun was had by all!"
ReplyDelete1 story stands out from the 70s ... It was a cold winter Detroit night, late. A group of masked, armed men came into the place & ordered "Everyone empty your pockets, strip, & lie face-down on the floor, THIS IS A ROBERY!" So naturally everyone did as told. As soon as the robbers exited, a rotund "regular" patron, her drag stage-name "The Emporess", stoodup, ran out the door completely naked, accross the street to the Jeffersonian Apt. security gate-house, telling the guard, "HELP, WE'VE BEEN ROBBED!"
Ah, fun tales of old historic GAY DETROIT ... WHAT A TIME.IT MUSTVE BEEN FR!
