Chez Monti - Detroit Michigan (Gay bar)
I don't know anything about this bar, help! It was located at 323 E Larned in Detroit. Bob Damron's 1968 guide book says that it had "Raunchy types, often commercial" and dancing. Please post any stories or photos!

Well, in 1964 323 E.Larned was Joe's Hotel, and considering the location in that era probably a skid row type hotel. Since Brush from Jefferson north to almost Congress was a skid row enclave.
ReplyDeleteI remember Chez Monti back in the late 70's and early 80's when it was spot to meet for drinks and then head over to the Famous Door if you wanted to party downtown. The area was never a skid road enclave. The building CM used to sit is gone and was replaced by the Millender Center across the street from the GM building. Chez Monti had a very nice after work clientele back then.
ReplyDeleteI'm afraid you don't know what the hell you're talking about when making the statement "The area was never a skid row enclave. Brush from Jefferson up to Congress sure as hell was a skid row pocket of downtown. In 1965, what is now the Sweetwater Tavern was a place called the 400 Bar. It was a "bum bar". How about the Claydale and Akron hotels ? The New Farmer Hotel ? Riverview Hotel ? Cloud 9 on Larned ? Another "bum bar" on Larned. Brush St. up to Congress was like this until about the Mid-70's.
