The crowd here tends to be mostly older locals - usually friendly, but very cliquey. I believe this place has been open for over 15 years, yet the inside has remained unchanged - same books on the shelf, same pictures on the wall - and is showing its age. The cigarette smoke upstairs can sometimes be more oppressive than the side room at Pronto (can't wait for May 1st).
Back in the 70's wasnt this called the Flame? If it was...it was a hot place back then..ALL the college students went there..the bartender was named Art and he was great behind the bar and in the sheets.....It may be small, but back then it was ours..well we had the Roubyot on Thrusdays, but the Flame was the only place we could go and be ourselves...Gay live was so differnt back then..most would not understand it today...
June 5 2011, you are correct, the Flame was the GREATEST outlet we had. We all knew Art back then...ask the people today how many barteners name they know. I went to the Roubyot every Thursday, but hit the Flame as often as I could. The Flame was the hottest place in Ann Arbor, the Roubyot only accepted us on Thursdays, which we packed the place, but every other night the only place we had was the Flame......and it was great....Art, if you are still out there drop a line to this site.....you were GREAT
Post Script....I went to the Flame in 1975, so the bar has been there since before most of you that posted were born..so this tiny lame bar has done better than most of us...
Actually I was referring to the Aut Bar as tiny and lame. The Flame was AWESOME!! Too bad it's gone now. Went to the Flame from about '77 until it closed in the late '90s.

this place sucks. over-rated in terms of atmosphere, food is WAY over-priced. if someone suggests going there for an evening, i make up an excuse to be busy. it's awful.
This blog is a hobby of mine. I am researching the history of gay bars and places in the city of Detroit. It is a work in progress; some of the bars that I list, I have no real information about what they were like or what kind of clientele they had or pictures. If you know something about an old bar, email me please. I want to post every gay bar in Detroit that ever was so people can respond with their own stories or what they know about them. I need pictures also of old bars that have since closed. This blog is also semi-autobiographical, I am going to share my own life stories of bars and places in Detroit.
I'm sorry, but if this tiny, lame, boring place is the best Ann Arbor can offer, that's truly PATHETIC.

ReplyDeleteYes, the Aut Bar will NEVER replace The Flame. There are no bars left like the Flame. It was like another world.
