Club 49 (Gay Bar)

    I was a bartender at the 49 and was apt manager of the castle in berry sub on parkview. fond memorys Indeed.

      Hello, do you have any info on the original owners or history of the bar?the original owner was shot and killed at the bar in the 70's

    Never went to Club 49 located on E. Jefferson, bout 3/4 mile east of Belle Isle, accross from the Jeffersonian Apts.; I was too young b4 it closed. But have older gay friends who say "It was the BEST! Old Detroit swag with a piano player, attracted 'all kinds of people', regardless of anything, & attitudes were 'checked @ the door', & fun was had by all!"
    1 story stands out from the 70s ... It was a cold winter Detroit night, late. A group of masked, armed men came into the place & ordered "Everyone empty your pockets, strip, & lie face-down on the floor, THIS IS A ROBERY!" So naturally everyone did as told. As soon as the robbers exited, a rotund "regular" patron, her drag stage-name "The Emporess", stoodup, ran out the door completely naked, accross the street to the Jeffersonian Apt. security gate-house, telling the guard, "HELP, WE'VE BEEN ROBBED!"
    Ah, fun tales of old historic GAY DETROIT ... WHAT A TIME.IT MUSTVE BEEN FR!
