Chevy's (Gay Bar)

This was the first bar I ever went into when I lived in Detroit in 1986. I was just 18 but was able to get in and more importantly, get served. Manager Andre was very touchy feely. Bartender Gary became one of my best friends. I would often spend the night at his place after the bars with he and his hubby Terry. They became like my drag mom and dad. I met my first boyfriend (nickname "Smokey") at Chevys. It was mostly old guys sitting around the bar, but occasional drag shows. Occasional Chaldean men from the neighborhood would come in looking to get their dicks sucked. I remember doing my first drag there with Hummin' Helen and Eunice Alexander. About midway through the show Terry came up to me and whispered "if the two guys at the bar approach you about taking tips, tell them it's a charity show". I didn't find out until afterwards that these guys were tipped off by a competing bar that Chevy's didn't have license for live performers. It was a surprise when they suddenly appeared in the dressing room and announced that they were Detroit Vice and were going to ticket us for performing - and taking tips - without a license.
