The Bitter Lemon (Gay Bar)

The Bitter Lemon was located on Jefferson in Detroit.  I heard a couple of people mention it. Post in the comments below if you know anything about it. Ca. 1972-1973

  1. This bar was located in Detroit on Jefferson near Belle Isle. Building has since been torn down. This info from a friend of mine who used to go there in early 70s.

    1. Les was my father. He first owned Chez Monte downtown on E. Larnard Ave in the mid 60’s, had The Bitter Lemon bar on East Jefferson at Mt. Elliott, then had The Third Man (don’t remember on which street), Then he had Bitter Lemon 2 out on Mack Ave, then his final bar in Detroit was Les’s Place in the late 1970’s. Feel free to share any memories that you may have of any of these places or of Les, my father.

    2. Remember how friendly everyone was. my best friend & I used to go there now & again (on Mack) after drinking at Lynn's across the street. There was a blond gentleman named Bruce (I know, how cliche, right?) who bartender and occasionally gave me rides home (as 1 of us understood how stupid hitchhiking was...). we were frequently invited when food was being served for various celebrations. it was adorable cuz they thought my best friend & I gay but closeted &/or too shy. untrue but they were so sweet.

  4. Does anyone remember "My Fair Lady" in that neighborhood? Classy, great bar . . . Robbie Marklewitz was a manager there I believe.
