Club 49 - Detroit, Michigan (Gay Bar)

Club 49 was located at 9217 E Jefferson Ave in Detroit. I do not know anything about this place. Please post any stories about it.

  1. Quiet little place. Usually just a few older gay men from Indian Village and the nearby apartments, mixed in with some non-gay drinkers from the neighborhood. I knew some guys who hung out here trading increasingly drunken quips, but it was all pretty boring.

  2. My late friend Ron and I would stop in a couple times a month, and the bar itself would have been a great place if someone could have saved it but I understood the owner who lived in Grosse Pointe only ran it as a tax right off and really didin't care to fix it up how sad.

    2. We used to have the best birthday parties for empress strippers, big cakes and Scotty the piano player? And that rotating grand piano behind the bar....good times....Halloween was always the best

    3. I lived in a large apt complex in the next block. I didn't go often but the few times I did I always took someone home with me.

  4. I frequented the Club 49 in the late 70's and early 80's. I was very young. Was dating a bartender who worked there. Always had a great time. The entrance of the bar, had a silhouette of a man with a With a Top Hat and a cane made in the tiles. I'm looking for photos of that.

  5. I worked mornings on Sundays at The Deck Bar, after work we would load up a couple of van loads of people and descend on the "49". We'd load the jukebox up and had an awesome time. From time to time we'd bring along a guy who could play piano and he'd play that old out of tune baby grand behind the bar. GOOD TIMES!
